Glucosamine

Glucosamine sulfate has the strongest evidence for knee osteoarthritis symptom reduction. The GAIT trial showed modest benefit; the MOVES trial showed equivalence to celecoxib in some subgroups. Structural modification effects remain debated.

Clinical Snapshot

Effect Size
Modest pain and function improvement in knee osteoarthritis; effect size smaller than NSAIDs but with better safety profile
Safety
Low Risk

Shell-derived; shellfish allergy is a contraindication for some products. Mild GI effects. Crystalline glucosamine sulfate outperforms hydrochloride form in trials.

Research Dosing

This reflects common ranges and protocols used in published studies, not personal medical advice.

Typical Daily Dose
1500 mg (sulfate form)
Timing
With meals, single or split dose
Protocol Duration in Studies
Minimum 8-12 weeks for symptom assessment; ongoing for joint support

Glucosamine sulfate is significantly better-evidenced than glucosamine HCl; form matters.

Best Fit Profiles

  • knee osteoarthritis symptom management as adjunct to physical therapy
